The Horizon Report is a collaborative effort between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI).
This 12th edition outlines annual findings from the NMC Horizon Project, an ongoing research project established to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, and creative inquiry in education. The panel have categorised these emerging technologies into 6 key trends, 6 significant challenges and 6 important developments.
The ‘key trends’ that the panel expect to accelerate technology adoption in H.E. are placed on 3 timelines: long-term, mid-term, and short-term:
Long-term trends (expected to impact for 5+ years)
- advancing cultures of change and innovation
- increasing cross-institution collaboration
Mid-term trends (3-4 yrs)
- growing focus on measuring learning
- proliferation of open educational resources (OER)
Short-term trends (1-2 yrs)
- increasing use of blended learning
- redesigning learning spaces
