NATO PONDERS ALLEGED RUSSIAN INF TREATY VIOLATION

If NATO’s language remains guarded, it is also shifting subtly the Alliance’s collective stance over Washington’s accusation that Moscow is in breach of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. Russia’s alleged development of a weapon that breaks the treaty was on the agenda of NATO defence ministers at their latest gathering on 3–4 October in Brussels.

At the event, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and US NATO Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison all flagged the issue of the claimed treaty breach. In remarks made on 4 October, Mattis said that Moscow was in ‘blatant violation’.
