
{"id":1704,"date":"2016-12-23T08:23:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T08:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/?p=1704"},"modified":"2016-12-18T13:17:01","modified_gmt":"2016-12-18T13:17:01","slug":"1704","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/2016\/12\/23\/1704\/","title":{"rendered":"Saying goodbye to &#8217;16 via Mr Key&#8217;s Brief Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2016\/12\/isbn9781472115232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1715 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2016\/12\/isbn9781472115232-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"isbn9781472115232\" width=\"191\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a>Throughout\u00a0this frankly challenging year, we have gained frequent strength and fortitude by regularly flipping through the pages of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlebrown.co.uk\/books\/detail.page?isbn=9781472115232\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Key&#8217;s Shorter Potted Brief, Brief Lives<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Little Brown, 2015). Its author and compiler, Frank Key, is a <a href=\"http:\/\/ansible.uk\/writing\/frankkey.html\" target=\"_blank\">small press legend<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hootingyard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">blogger<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mixcloud.com\/Resonance\/hooting-yard-on-the-air-22nd-september-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\"> radio personality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Taking as its starting point <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/1108812\/aubrey-s-brief-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Aubrey&#8217;s <em>Brief Lives<\/em><\/a>, Mr Key has attempted to encapsulate a subject&#8217;s life via the most succinct and evocative anecdote.<\/p>\n<p>In order to\u00a0say goodbye to 2016 in appropriate style, here are a few entries from Mr Key&#8217;s<em> Lives<\/em>, all of which relate in some way to years that end in 16.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beverland, Hadrian\u00a0<\/strong>(Dutch philosopher and classical scholar, 1650-1716). When Beverland published\u00a0<em>Original Sin<\/em>, his survey of the sexual abnormalities of the ancient world, in 1679, it was denounced by the authorities at Leyden University as &#8216;abominable and scandalous&#8217; and &#8216;an abortion from depraved brains&#8217;. He was banished from Holland never to return. He spent the rest of his life in London where, shortly before he died, he wrote &#8216;The Song of the Borts of Pray&#8217;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have no Wife<\/p>\n<p>The Devil Upon Two Crutches<\/p>\n<p>Chear! Chear! Hier<\/p>\n<p>Carry me to Hell.<\/p>\n<p>I do not know my L. where Hell is: But if it may please your L. I carry you to the Devil.<\/p>\n<p>Go unto the Devil tavern.<\/p>\n<p>What upon Crutches!<\/p>\n<p>I am very Old, if it may please your L.<\/p>\n<p>No Old Devil can please me. On Christmas Day 1716, Wesley was haunted by an apparition of a badger with no head.
