
{"id":298,"date":"2016-03-21T08:52:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-21T08:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/?p=298"},"modified":"2016-03-16T16:59:03","modified_gmt":"2016-03-16T16:59:03","slug":"23-march-2016-illustration-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/2016\/03\/21\/23-march-2016-illustration-event\/","title":{"rendered":"23 March 2016: Illustration Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>You are welcome to attend the following FREE Illustration Event\u00a0<\/b>at Plymouth University<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">on 23 March 2016 from 12 noon &#8211; 5 pm<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Roland Levinsky Building<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>SCHEDULE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>12:00<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>David Hughes&#8217;<\/b> work incorporates aspects of illustration, graphic design, photography and animation, and his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satirical\" target=\"_blank\">satirical<\/a>\u00a0drawings (often on the themes of &#8220;war, politics and social crisis&#8221;) have appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Punch_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Punch<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Observer\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Observer<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The New Yorker<\/i><\/a>, as well as being exhibited internationally. Hughes states that he rarely uses references, favouring &#8220;develop[ing] forms through drawing&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">&#8220;You don&#8217;t think of ideas.., you know, sometimes an idea pops into your head but rarely for me. ideas come through drawing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">His work has also appeared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evening_Standard\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Evening Standard<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GQ\" target=\"_blank\"><i>GQ<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Esquire_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Esquire<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Today_(UK_newspaper)\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Today<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Washington Post<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The New Yorker<\/i><\/a>, while Hughes has also produced work for UK TV station <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Channel_4\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4<\/a>. His design work for the stage includes two operatic productions at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spoleto\" target=\"_blank\">Spoleto<\/a>, in 1993 and 1998.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Widely acclaimed as a children&#8217;s book illustrator, Hughes also writes some of the books he illustrates, as well as illustrating the work of others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>13:00 Break<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>14:00<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Jonathan \u201cJJ\u201d Hudson<\/b> is a club kind com music industry stylist who goes by the name NOKI (a play on IKON).
