
{"id":548,"date":"2016-05-18T09:00:10","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T09:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/?p=548"},"modified":"2016-05-13T17:25:08","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T17:25:08","slug":"thinkering-unsymposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/artsinstitute\/2016\/05\/18\/thinkering-unsymposium\/","title":{"rendered":"18 June 2016: Thinkering unSymposium in Plymouth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Saturday 18th June 2016,\u00a010am &#8211; 7.30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Ocean Studios &#8211; The Factory Cooperage, Royal William Yard, Plymouth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This event explores the theme of t(h)inkering\u2014a practice that brings together tinkering and thinking\u2014in the contexts of living coding, hardware hacking, the maker movement, media archaeology and design.<\/p>\n<p>This unSymposium is made up of 3 workshops that will run simultaneously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transduction led by Morten Riis (DK)<\/li>\n<li>Live Coding by\u00a0Shelly Knotts\u00a0(UK)<\/li>\n<li>Modular Synthesis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/staff\/david-bessell\">David Bessel<\/a>l\u00a0(UK)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How can working with, making, reflecting on, subverting and performing with tools and materials inspire new perspectives and approaches to knowledge? Thinkering raises issues around doing-it- yourself (DIY) versus doing-it- with-others (DIWO); ecology and obsolescence; and the tensions between signs and signals; aesthetics and tools, ontology and epistemology.<\/p>\n<p>If thinkering suggests new ways of approaching knowledge, practice-based research, art and aesthetics, it also upend assumptions about academia as a gate-keeper of knowledge, pointing to the proliferation of maker\/hacker labs, workshops and vernacular engagement with tools and materials.
