The Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, has said he will certainly consider basing one of the UK’s new general purpose frigates in Gibraltar, once these vessels have been built.
The suggestion was made by Conservative MP Bob Stewart, who said the facilities in Gibraltar are superb, and the Type 26 frigates would be in a very good position to operate.
However this is still a long way off, with Mr Fallon describing the general purpose frigate programme as being in its very early stages.
The Defence Secretary said Gibraltar is a key base for the Royal Navy adding that the Rock retains its affiliation to the Crown despite the recent EU referendum.
Meanwhile, the MoD has confirmed that HMS Ambush, which was involved in a collision near Gibraltar, is being repaired at the Clyde Naval Base and an inquiry is underway to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
