Saudi border guards have taken over Salwa land port with Qatar to launch a project to turn it to a canal, a process that will cut off all land borders with Qatar, Sabq local online news reported.
Sources confirmed to the news portal that the project would be financed by Saudi and UAE private investment companies and it would be run by Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, the digging would be handled by Egyptian companies with the experience they gained in building the Suez Canal.
The sources also highlighted that the area would also include the establishment of a Saudi military base and a landfill for the waste of the planned Saudi nuclear plant.
The project is the latest development in the rifts between Qatar and Saudi-led states, including UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, which decided to boycott Qatar over allegations of interfering in their internal affairs and backing terrorism.
