Turkey\u2019s Defense Minister Fikri I\u015f\u0131k has said the deployment of Turkish military units to \u015e\u0131rnak\u2019s Silopi district, an area near the Iraqi border, is related to the fight against terrorism and developments in Iraq.<\/p>\n

The Turkish Army deployed to the region the 28th Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the 4th Army Corp based at Mamak Ankara<\/p>\n

\u201cTurkey needs to make preparations for any possibility beforehand. This is part of those preparations,\u201d said I\u015f\u0131k, referring to the military deployment in Silopi.<\/p>\n

I\u015f\u0131k also told broadcaster A Haber that Turkey has \u201cno obligation\u201d to wait on its side of theborder and will do what is necessary if militants from the terrorist Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) get a foothold in Iraq\u2019s Sinjar region.<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s armed forces had begun deploying tanks and other armored vehicles to Silopi, military sources said earlier.<\/p>\n

The deployment comes after President Tayyip Erdo\u011fan said on Saturday that Turkey was aiming to reinforce its troops there, saying Ankara would have a \u201cdifferent response\u201d for Shiite militia groups if they \u201ccause terror\u201d in the Iraqi city of Tal Afar.<\/p>\n

Tal Afar, some 170 kilometers (106 miles) from Silopi, is home to a sizeable ethnic Turkmen population with historic and cultural ties to Turkey.<\/p>\n

\u015e\u0131rnak province, where Silopi is located, is also one of the main areas of conflict between the Turkish military and PKK militants, who have bases in northern Iraq.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
