
{"id":194,"date":"2015-08-17T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T09:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/?p=194"},"modified":"2015-09-24T10:03:47","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T10:03:47","slug":"extraordinary-artful-sails-on-maiden-voyage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/2015\/08\/17\/extraordinary-artful-sails-on-maiden-voyage\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018EXTRAORDINARY\u2019 ARTFUL SAILS ON MAIDEN VOYAGE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-195\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails.jpg\" alt=\"xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails\" width=\"876\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails.jpg 876w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails-560x286.jpg 560w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails-260x133.jpg 260w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/09\/xlarge_HMS_Artful-sails-160x82.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearly ten and a half years after the first steel was cut on her, HMS Artful (S-121) departed Barrow to begin her maiden trials \u2013 15 months after she was rolled out of the cavernous construction hall at BAE Systems yard.<\/p>\n<p>Commanding Officer Commander Scott Bower guided the third of the Silent Service\u2019s Astute-class boats out of Devonshire Dock, past the raised span of the Michaelson Road bridge, down the dog-leg of Buccleuch Dock, into the Walney Channel and finally out into the open waters of the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n<p>There she\u2019s testing various systems before making her debut in her future home of Faslane, already the base of her older sisters HMS Astute and Ambush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crew, alongside the workers at BAE Systems, have done a sterling job in generating more than a million parts into a submarine,\u201d said Cdr Bower of his boat which has been compared in terms of complexity with the Space Shuttle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtful\u2019s capabilities are extraordinary \u2013 she represents the next step in our country\u2019s history of operating submarines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m now looking forward to proving what she is capable of during our sea trials \u2013 and continuing our progress towards our first operational mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the 15 months since the boat entered the water, Artful has undergone numerous tests of her propulsion and power systems \u2013 notably her nuclear reactor \u2013 and carried out a partial dive in the dock (it\u2019s wide and long enough to accommodate an A-boat, but at \u2018only\u2019 82ft waters are not deep enough to submerge the Astutes entirely).<\/p>\n<p>Like the boat, the 100-strong crew have gone through similarly-exhaustive instruction and practice, culminating in an assessment by the team from the Flag Officer Sea Training just before Artful put to sea.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the lessons learned building her sisters, the boat departed Barrow in a considerably more advanced state \u2013 which will speed up the time it will take for her to complete trials and training and beginning front-line patrols.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems Submarines, said seeing the 97-metre boat leave was the crowning moment of \u201ca huge amount of hard work from everyone at BAE, our partners and the hundreds of businesses in our supply chain network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone involved in the Astute programme should feel immensely proud of their achievements as the third in class Astute submarine reaches this significant milestone.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly ten and a half years after the first steel was cut on her, HMS Artful (S-121) departed Barrow to begin her maiden trials \u2013 15 months after she was rolled out of the cavernous construction hall at BAE Systems yard.
