They cut air, sea and land links and ordered Qatari officials\u00a0and nationals\u00a0stationed in their countries to return home.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar, with just over\u00a0300,000 citizens, has played an outsize role on the world stage\u00a0because of its great wealth of oil and natural gas.\u00a0Global oil prices\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/oil-prices-jump-after-saudi-arabia-other-middle-east-nations-cut-ties-with-qatar-2017-06-05\">wobbled<\/a>\u00a0Monday as both sides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/gadfly\/articles\/2017-06-05\/qatar-s-deep-pockets-are-vulnerable-to-palace-politics\">dug in their heels<\/a>. Already, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2017\/06\/05\/qatar-could-face-a-food-crisis-in-spat-with-arab-neighbors\/?tid=pm_world_pop&amp;utm_term=.b18f30aed0fe\">as my colleagues reported<\/a>, panic over a Saudi blockade of Qatar&#8217;s only land border prompted spooked residents to clean out supermarket shelves in Doha.<\/p>\n<p>The move is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/four-arab-nations-sever-diplomatic-ties-with-qatar-exposing-rift-in-region\/2017\/06\/05\/15ad2284-49b4-11e7-9669-250d0b15f83b_story.html?utm_term=.efa44a49b6e0\">a reflection of long-running frustrations<\/a>\u00a0with the Qataris, who the Saudis and Emiratis\u00a0claim are supporting terrorist groups as well as being far too cordial with Iran, their regional archrival.
