As Russia and Belarus prep for their quadrennial fight-the-West wargame, NATO\u2019s Baltic states are watching more than a bit nervously. <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

For the Baltic countries on NATO<\/span>\u2019s northeastern flank, carefully monitoring Russia\u2019s various defense investments and activities is nothing new. Like brushing your teeth, it\u2019s just a matter of staying healthy, Estonia\u2019s defense minister told a small group of reporters while visiting the U.S.<\/span> last week. Observing Russian military activity is that routine, \u201cbut we do it even more often,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

So Margus Tsahkna and his counterparts in neighboring Latvia and Lithuania say they\u2019re in no way unprepared for Russia\u2019s upcoming military exercise, Zapad (\u201cWest\u201d) 2017. The joint exercise with Belarus, which simulates a full-scale conflict with the West, happens every four years. But even so, \u201cit\u2019s not comfortable at all when we expect to have 100,000 troops around our borders,\u201d Lithuanian Minister of Defence Raimundas Karoblis said during a recent visit to\u00a0Washington.<\/p>\n

Scheduled for autumn, this year\u2019s Zapad will be the first since Russia annexed Crimea in\u00a02014.<\/p>\n
