Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced his country\u2019s goal of building <span lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/turkey\/erdogan-says-turkey-to-build-aircraft-carriers-392733\">\u201cour own aircraft carriers\u201d<\/a><\/span> as part of Ankara\u2019s efforts to \u201cbecome independent in the field of defense by 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must move even faster,\u201d Erdogan declared. \u201cWe are proud of our ability to build military ships, especially construction of submarines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan\u2019s remark isn\u2019t necessarily far-fetched. It comes more than\u00a0a year after <span lang=\"en-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/navaltoday.com\/2016\/05\/03\/first-steel-cut-for-turkish-lhd-ship\/\">Turkey began construction<\/a><\/span> on the TCG <i>Anadolu<\/i>, an amphibious assault ship based on Spain\u2019s <i>Juan Carlos I<\/i>.
