It is one of the worst border disputes between the regional rivals in more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\">The road stands on territory at the point where <a class=\"meta-loc\" title=\"More news and information about China.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/china\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">China<\/a>, <a class=\"meta-loc\" title=\"More news and information about India.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/india\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">India<\/a> and <a class=\"meta-loc\" title=\"More news and information about Bhutan.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/bhutan\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">Bhutan<\/a> meet. The standoff began last month when Bhutan, a close ally of India, discovered Chinese workers trying to extend the road. India <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/27\/world\/asia\/india-china-border.html\">responded<\/a> by sending troops and equipment to halt the construction.
