
{"id":481,"date":"2015-10-22T21:04:04","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T21:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/?p=481"},"modified":"2015-10-22T21:04:04","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T21:04:04","slug":"british-warships-gear-up-for-trident-juncture-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/2015\/10\/22\/british-warships-gear-up-for-trident-juncture-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"BRITISH WARSHIPS GEAR UP FOR &#8220;TRIDENT JUNCTURE&#8221; EXERCISE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-483\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean.jpg\" alt=\"HMS Ocean\" width=\"670\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean.jpg 670w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean-560x374.jpg 560w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean-260x173.jpg 260w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/dcss\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2015\/10\/HMS-Ocean-160x107.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>HMS Ocean sailed from Livorno while HMS Bulwark sailed from Toulon straight into the warm up phase of Exercise Trident Juncture.<\/p>\n<p>Both vessels have spent months preparing for the ambitious exercise which will see around 36,000 personnel from more than 30 nations taking part in locations around Italy, Spain and Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean visited Livorno to stock up on supplies and embark US Marines in preparation for their role in the \u201clive\u201d phase of NATO\u2019s biggest exercise for 20 years \u2013 which will take place in Spain and Portugal at the start on November.<\/p>\n<p>Since leaving the UK last month, Ocean has hosted the UK Maritime Battle Staff as it conducted a major \u2018table top\u2019 wargame and tested the communications that will enable it to command NATO\u2019s warships in the forthcoming training scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>For the ship, the tempo of operation has increased with the flight deck team and air traffic controllers working with the ship\u2019s full complement of helicopters from the Fleet Air Arm and RAF.<\/p>\n<p>Wildcat helicopters from 847 Naval Air Squadron, Merlin Mk2 from 814 Naval Air Squadron and Chinooks from 27 Squadron RAF, have been rehearsing the drills they will use to deliver 45 Commando Royal Marines and the US Marine Corps to the heart of the action in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Commander Graeme Spence, the Commanding Officer of 847 NAS, said: \u201cThe squadron has spent a good year converting to the Lynx helicopter\u2019s successor \u2013 during which time we have tried to persuade the world that Wildcat is not a Lynx. This exercise will give the fliers a chance to prove this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Out have gone the paper charts as the helicopter has gone digital, however the mission remains the same \u2013 battlefield reconnaissance helicopter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have far more capacity to deal with information \u2013 to understand what is going on it means we&#8217;re more able to help the commandos with what&#8217;s happening on the ground, so they can make better informed decisions,\u201d added Cdr Spence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us the goal is to really get to grips with Wildcat. We&#8217;ve done the theory.
