
{"id":1406,"date":"2010-11-08T16:09:31","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T16:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/technologyenhancedlearning.net\/?p=1406"},"modified":"2010-11-08T16:09:31","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T16:09:31","slug":"new-facebook-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/digital-education\/new-facebook-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"New Facebook Groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook recently modified its <a title=\"Learn more about Facebook groups\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/about\/groups\">\u2018Groups\u2019<\/a> feature to provide a range of functionality that will certainly help make it more useful to those of us using Facebook within our teaching practice, albeit with a few challenges.<\/p>\n<p>There is some further description\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allfacebook.com\/new-facebook-groups-2010-10#idc-cover\" target=\"_blank\">in this post by allfacebook.com<\/a>. \u00a0You will see that now, everyone can post links, photos, videos and events. You can also upload and collaborate on a document. Another new feature is the ability to have live group chats. All of these could be great for student groups. BUT&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>group members can add their own friends so, even a closed group can quickly have hundreds of members, which means you will receive lots of emails unless you turn this off via &#8216;Edit Settings&#8217; on the Group page. This also <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-19518_3-20019428-238.html\" target=\"_blank\">raises privacy issues as consequently you are sharing posts with complete strangers<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>you can be added to a group by a friend and will automatically be associated with it until you go to that group and remove yourself<\/li>\n<li>there is nowhere to add a description of the group, or to publicise events &#8211; you are only given the option to add posts, which, of course, get hidden as people post to the wall<\/li>\n<li>the discussion board has been removed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the moment, Facebook are continuing to support old groups but, if you want to set up a new &#8216;old style&#8217; group I&#8217;m afraid you&#8217;ll have to find someone who is willing to donate an unused one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook recently modified its \u2018Groups\u2019 feature to provide a range of functionality that will certainly help make it more useful to those of us using Facebook within our teaching practice, albeit with a few challenges.
