
{"id":976,"date":"2016-09-15T16:03:17","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T16:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/telmed\/?p=976"},"modified":"2020-01-06T15:43:03","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T15:43:03","slug":"immersive-vision-theatre-owsi-project-impact-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/digital-education\/immersive-vision-theatre-owsi-project-impact-so-far\/","title":{"rendered":"Immersive Vision Theatre (OWSI) Project: Impact So Far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8212; This post was written by Luke McGowan &#8212;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recently we were really pleased to learn that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/news\/world-first-film-aims-to-improve-childrens-oral-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Wide and Step Inside<\/a>\u00a0(OWSI) project that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/your-university\/about-us\/university-structure\/faculties\/medicine-dentistry\/pupsmd-technology-enhanced-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TELMeD<\/a> worked on with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peninsuladental.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDSE<\/a>\u00a0had received a second round of funding. This is obviously great news, and reaffirms the value and impact that the project is having. Nice to know,\u00a0since\u00a0it took a lot of effort to make!<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in previous posts, \u2018Open Wide and Step Inside\u2019 was designed to provide dental healthcare information in a fun and engaging way, to\u00a0primary school children aged 5-7 years.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2016\/feb\/27\/england-hospital-treatment-children-severe-tooth-decay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Childhood dental health\u00a0continues to be a hot topic in the media<\/a>. Only today I read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/news\/dental-public-health-expert-reacts-to-lga-report-on-childrens-teeth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article citing recent statistics<\/a>\u00a0which advise\u00a0that\u00a0around 100 children and teenagers a day are being admitted to hospital to remove rotten teeth&#8230; and a staggering 35 million pounds was spent in 2014-15 on removing them!<\/p>\n<p>I enquired with PDSE&#8217;s Nicola Brown as to the measurable impact the project has had so far. She kindly provided me with some stats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 local primary schools have participated to date, this will be\u00a025 by the end of round 2<\/li>\n<li>477 children have attended so far and\u00a0over 2,000 children will\u00a0experience the film by the\u00a0end of round 2<\/li>\n<li>25 parents have attended the Immersive Vision Theatre,\u00a0this will be 100\u00a0by the end of round 2<\/li>\n<li>528 goody bags (including toothbrushes and toothpaste) have been distributed to date, this will be 2000+ by the end of round 2<\/li>\n<li>20\u00a0teaching packs have been provided,\u00a0this will be\u00a050 by the end of round 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peninsuladental.org.uk\/in-the-community\/open-wide-and-step-inside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More information is available on PDSE&#8217;s website<\/a>\u00a0and the page includes a great\u00a0video which I have also included below &#8211; it\u00a0gives a nice\u00a0overview of the project and it does a great job of capturing the really positive reaction of the kids who have attended.The feedback received from children and teachers is that the children enjoy the story, their goody bags and the experience of visiting the\u00a0Immersive Vision Theatre.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IVT Visit (Final Version)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V6njH3Z0P-8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>PDSE are now looking to expand the project&#8217;s reach by acquiring their own portable &#8216;Go Dome&#8217;, which can be used to take the OWSI project on the road whenever and wherever it is needed!<\/p>\n<p>OWSI continues to be a project\u00a0that TELMeD are\u00a0proud to have been a part of.
