The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a five year, £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that enables ODA-eligible developing countries to addresses challenges as laid out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The fund supports research that is challenge-led and interdisciplinary and strengthens capacity for:

As part of building capacity, Research England has awarded the University an annual block grant of around £347,000 which will be allocated via an open competition. The University wants to support a diverse portfolio of research activities that will:
- create equitable partnerships between researchers, practitioners and policy-makers in both developed and developing countries
- build capacity and capability to undertake research across career stages in the UK and developing countries
- build capacity and capability to create meaningful impact from research in the UK and developing countries
- support pump-priming activities to underpin funding bids, build networks, develop relationships etc.
- support rapid-response requests and capacity
It is anticipated there will be 2 rounds of funding in this academic year in September and January and projects can last from 12-24 months.
