The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/grant-funding\/guidance\/open-access-guidance\/open-access-policy\">Wellcome Trust\u2019s new OA policy<\/a>\u00a0commenced on 1 January 2021 and is similarly aligned with the Plan S principles.<\/p>\n<p>Find out more about Plan S in our <a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/funders\">guidance on Plan S and funder policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>When will the new policy\u00a0apply?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The new OA policy will apply to research articles submitted for publication on or after\u00a0<b>1 April 2022<\/b>.\u00a0For research articles submitted before this date,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/about-us\/policies-standards-and-data\/good-research-resource-hub\/open-research\/\">current\u00a0OA\u00a0policy<\/a>\u00a0still applies.<\/p>\n<p>The new policy\u00a0will also\u00a0encompass long-form publications,\u00a0such as monographs,\u00a0published on or after\u00a0<b>1 January 2024<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on current UKRI OA policies, visit\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/funders\">current funder policy guidance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What\u2019s changing?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i>Journal articles<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Articles must be made Open Access\u00a0<b>immediately upon publication<\/b>. This\u00a0differs from the current policy which allows an embargo period to be applied\u00a0to manuscripts deposited in a repository such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pearl.plymouth.ac.uk\/\">PEARL.<\/a>\u00a0Under the new policy, no such embargos are permitted. You can find out more about how to comply with this change below.<\/li>\n<li>UKRI will continue to fund Open Access costs for journal articles, but will now only do so for <strong>fully Open Access journals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>By\u00a0default,\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>CC\u00a0BY license<\/strong> must be applied to\u00a0open access articles, although\u00a0in some cases a CC BY ND license may be permitted. (You can find out more about Creative Commons licenses in\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/copyright\">guidance\u00a0on author copyright and articles<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Researchers must\u00a0include\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>Data Access Statement<\/strong>\u00a0with their article\u00a0providing information on\u00a0how underlying\u00a0research materials such as data\u00a0or software can be\u00a0accessed, if this is applicable. This must be provided even when an article has no data associated with it, or the data are not accessible.<\/li>\n<li>Researchers\u00a0must\u00a0include text\u00a0provided by UKRI\u00a0in their manuscript submission\u00a0which\u00a0enables them to\u00a0<strong>retain the copyright to their Accepted Manuscript<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Books and book chapters<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While the current UKRI policy does not\u00a0encompass long-form publications, the new OA policy includes <strong>monographs, book chapters and edited collections<\/strong>.\u00a0Details of which outputs are within scope can be found in the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UKRI-180821-UKRIOpenAccessPolicy-2.pdf\">OA policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In-scope\u00a0long-form publications must be made Open Access within <strong>12 months of publication<\/strong>. You can find out more about how researchers will be able to comply with this policy below.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>CC BY license<\/strong> will be required for long-form publications, with some permissible exceptions.\u00a0Third-party materials (e.g.\u00a0images, photographs, or maps) which are subject to a more restrictive license\u00a0may be included.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How will I make sure my research articles are compliant?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Both Gold\u00a0open access\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0an output for which the published version is fully open) or Green\u00a0open access\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0an output for which the published version is behind a paywall, but an open access version is deposited in a repository such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pearl.plymouth.ac.uk\/\">PEARL<\/a>)\u00a0are\u00a0compliant with UKRI\u2019s policy, provided that open access is not delayed by an embargo.<\/p>\n<p>There are therefore three routes to complying with UKRI\u2019s new policy\u00a0when publishing a journal article:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Publish in a fully Open Access journal.<\/b>\u00a0UKRI will continue to fund Article Processing Charges (APCs) for this type of journal.<\/li>\n<li><b>Publish in any journal for which the University of Plymouth has a transformative (&#8216;Read &amp; Publish&#8217;) agreement in place.<\/b>\u00a0You can find out more about transformative agreements\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/readandpublish\">here.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><b>Publish in a subscription journal\u00a0and make the Accepted Manuscript open without embargo.<\/b>\u00a0Since many\u00a0publishers\u00a0stipulate embargo periods for Accepted Manuscripts, UKRI\u2019s new policy requires that authors attach the following text to any\u00a0manuscript submissions:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY)\u00a0licence\u00a0(where permitted by UKRI, \u2018Open Government\u00a0Licence\u2019 or \u2018Creative Commons Attribution No-derivatives (CC BY-ND)\u00a0licence\u00a0may be stated instead) to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">The intention of applying this text is to allow the author to retain copyright to the Accepted Manuscript, thereby circumventing the publisher&#8217;s embargo policy, since the publisher cannot mandate an embargo for a version of the output which they do not own. This strategy for achieving immediate open access is known as the \u2018<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coalition-s.org\/rights-retention-strategy\/\">Rights Retention Strategy<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/readandpublish\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-305\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1088\" height=\"1285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance.jpeg 1088w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-254x300.jpeg 254w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-768x907.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-867x1024.jpeg 867w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-560x661.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-260x307.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2021\/09\/UKRI-OA-compliance-160x189.jpeg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1088px) 100vw, 1088px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'Cantata One', serif;letter-spacing: 0.05em\">How do I make a book or book chapter open access?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">UKRI\u2019s policy on long-form publications won\u2019t be implemented until\u00a0<strong>January\u00a02024<\/strong>, and much of the guidance on this part of the policy has yet to be released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">UKRI have indicated that\u00a0they will provide funding to support Open Access costs associated with\u00a0long-form output publication (see UKRI\u2019s \u2018<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/UKRI-180821-UKRIOpenAccessPolicyExplanationOfChanges-2.pdf\">Explanation of Policy Changes<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u2019); more information will be released on this in due course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">Open access publication for book chapters is already well supported, as many publishers permit the deposit of single chapters in institutional repositories. Researchers can visit\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/oabookchapters\">guidance on open access book chapters<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u00a0to find more information on this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">Although the process of achieving open access for books is not yet as simple as\u00a0it is for journal articles,\u00a0support\u00a0for fully open access books is on the rise.\u00a0Projects like\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.copim.ac.uk\/\">COPIM<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u00a0are working towards building\u00a0infrastructure for open access book publishing, and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/blog\/new-ukri-policy-is-a-significant-driver-towards-open-access-research-06-aug-2021?utm_term=Res%3A%20New%20UKRI%20open%20access%20policy&amp;utm_campaign=Headlines&amp;utm_content=Headlines%2007%2F09%2F2021&amp;utm_medium=Headlines&amp;utm_source=Adestra+Email\">Jisc<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u00a0are\u00a0collaborating with publishers to agree upon\u00a0publication models.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">You can find out more about the various existing models for\u00a0open access books, how to find open access book publishers, and the benefits of publishing an open access book in\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/oabooks\">guidance on open access books<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">.\u00a0OAPEN\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oabooks-toolkit.org\/\">OA\u00a0Books Toolkit<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">\u00a0is another helpful resource\u00a0for authors to better understand open access book publishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"color: #333333;font-family: 'Cantata One', serif;letter-spacing: 0.05em\">How to prepare\u00a0for policy implementation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">Below are some of the ways in which researchers can ensure they are prepared for\u00a0the implementation of UKRI\u2019s new Open Access policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you familiar with\u00a0transformative (\u2018Read &amp; Publish\u2019) agreements, and how you can make use of them?\u00a0Visit\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plymouth.libguides.com\/research\/readandpublish\">guidance on Read &amp; Publish agreements<\/a>\u00a0to find out more.<\/li>\n<li>Do you know how to identify fully Open Access journals?
