On the 6th\u00a0of August 2021, UKRI published its new\u00a0Open Access\u00a0policy<\/a>\u00a0for research publications which acknowledge funding from any of UKRI’s councils<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n UKRI is a member of\u00a0cOAlition S<\/a>, the group of funding organisations\u00a0behind\u00a0Plan S<\/a>.<\/p>\n Plan S, which commenced on 1 January 2021,\u00a0is an initiative for\u00a0open\u00a0access publishing\u00a0intended to accelerate the movement towards openness in\u00a0academic research.\u00a0The plan\u00a0centres\u00a0on\u00a0ten key principles,<\/a>\u00a0which the\u00a0funding organisations that comprise\u00a0cOAlition\u00a0S (including UKRI) are\u00a0committed to aligning their\u00a0OA policies\u00a0with.<\/p>\n UKRI\u2019s\u00a0announcement\u00a0follows\u00a0that of\u00a0the\u00a0Wellcome\u00a0Trust, another member of\u00a0cOAlition\u00a0S. The\u00a0Wellcome Trust\u2019s new OA policy<\/a>\u00a0commenced on 1 January 2021 and is similarly aligned with the Plan S principles.<\/p>\n Find out more about Plan S in our guidance on Plan S and funder policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The new OA policy will apply to research articles submitted for publication on or after\u00a01 April 2022<\/b>.\u00a0For research articles submitted before this date,\u00a0current\u00a0OA\u00a0policy<\/a>\u00a0still applies.<\/p>\n The new policy\u00a0will also\u00a0encompass long-form publications,\u00a0such as monographs,\u00a0published on or after\u00a01 January 2024<\/b>.<\/p>\n For more information on current UKRI OA policies, visit\u00a0our\u00a0current funder policy guidance<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Journal articles<\/i><\/p>\n Books and book chapters<\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Both Gold\u00a0open access\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0an output for which the published version is fully open) or Green\u00a0open access\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0an output for which the published version is behind a paywall, but an open access version is deposited in a repository such as\u00a0PEARL<\/a>)\u00a0are\u00a0compliant with UKRI\u2019s policy, provided that open access is not delayed by an embargo.<\/p>\n There are therefore three routes to complying with UKRI\u2019s new policy\u00a0when publishing a journal article:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY)\u00a0licence\u00a0(where permitted by UKRI, \u2018Open Government\u00a0Licence\u2019 or \u2018Creative Commons Attribution No-derivatives (CC BY-ND)\u00a0licence\u00a0may be stated instead) to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/p>\n The intention of applying this text is to allow the author to retain copyright to the Accepted Manuscript, thereby circumventing the publisher’s embargo policy, since the publisher cannot mandate an embargo for a version of the output which they do not own. This strategy for achieving immediate open access is known as the \u2018<\/span>Rights Retention Strategy<\/a>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n UKRI\u2019s policy on long-form publications won\u2019t be implemented until\u00a0January\u00a02024<\/strong>, and much of the guidance on this part of the policy has yet to be released.<\/span><\/p>\n UKRI have indicated that\u00a0they will provide funding to support Open Access costs associated with\u00a0long-form output publication (see UKRI\u2019s \u2018<\/span>Explanation of Policy Changes<\/a>\u2019); more information will be released on this in due course.<\/span><\/p>\n Open access publication for book chapters is already well supported, as many publishers permit the deposit of single chapters in institutional repositories.
