
{"id":231,"date":"2023-08-02T14:44:21","date_gmt":"2023-08-02T14:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/ripcurrents\/?page_id=231"},"modified":"2023-09-01T12:02:06","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T12:02:06","slug":"topographic-rips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.plymouth.ac.uk\/ripcurrents\/key-points\/topographic-rips\/","title":{"rendered":"Boundary rips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boundary rips are often created when <strong>longshore currents<\/strong> created by waves in the surf <strong>deflect off solid obstructions<\/strong> like groynes, breakwaters, rock outcrops and headlands.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boundary <strong>rip current bathing hazards <\/strong>are caused by a combination of the <strong>rip<\/strong> <strong>speed<\/strong> and the <strong>offshore extent <\/strong>of the rip flow.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boundary <strong>rip<\/strong> <strong>speed<\/strong> increases with wave height and wave angle. Wave angle was an increasingly important control of rip speed as wave height increased. Boundary <strong>rips became active<\/strong> when <strong>wave height exceeded 0.5 m<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The spacing between multiple obstructions can control the strength of the longshore current and hence the deflected boundary rip. <strong>Rip speed<\/strong> is significantly <strong>reduced<\/strong> when <strong>spacing is less than 4 times the obstruction length<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The boundary <strong>rip flow pattern<\/strong> is strongly affected by the <strong>length of the obstruction<\/strong>. The <strong>offshore extent<\/strong> (and proportion of rip exits) of the rip flow increases as the effective obstruction length increases (length in relation to surf zone width).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boundary rips are especially <strong>hazardous<\/strong> to bathers on low-energy beaches that only occasionally receive high waves. These beaches do not usually have beach rips and the boundary rip hazard is often intermittent. This can lead to an absence of lifeguard cover, lower rip experience amongst beach users and an element of surprise when rip flows are strong.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Under <strong>medium wave conditions<\/strong> (larger than 0.5 m) with <strong>large wave angles<\/strong> (45\u02da), boundary <strong>rip flow speed can remain high<\/strong> &gt;0.5 m\/s) while the surf is still accessible to bathers, meaning <strong>exposure <\/strong>to rip currents and rip hazard are both <strong>high<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boundary rips are often created when longshore currents created by waves in the surf deflect off solid obstructions like groynes, breakwaters, rock outcrops and headlands.
