Russia has sent additional strategic air defense systems of the most modern designs in its arsenal to Syria ahead of the expected expansion of its permanent bases in the country.
On Tuesday, Russian-linked media released footage of the arrival of additional S-400 strategic surface-to-air missile systems via sea-lifters to the Syrian port city of Latakia.
This bolstering of Russia’s strategic air defense capabilities in Syria comes just after Moscow ratified plans to expand its air and naval installations – based in Latakia and Tartus respectively – into fully-fledged permanent bases.
Sources confirm that the shipment, which most likely took place in December and was not announced until several hours ago, contained two S-400 systems.
