In this session, Professor Naren Barfield will discuss how we might recognise and understand what constitutes an ‘internationally-excellent’ or ‘world-leading’ research output in the fields of art and design.

More generally, for those who might not be located within this unit of assessment, he will focus on the presentation and assessment of ‘practical’ outputs such as artworks, exhibitions, artefacts, performances and so on.

Professor Barfield is Pro-Rector (Academic) at the Royal College of Art and was a member of the Art & Design (Unit 34) sub-panel for REF 2014. Prior to this appointment he was Head of Research & Postgraduate Studies at Glasgow School of Art and Director of Research at Wimbledon School of Art. With a background in fine art, Professor Barfield’s research expertise is in digital printmaking.

This workshop is available to any Plymouth University researcher (including those who currently, or intend to, collaborate with arts and humanities researchers in the production of outputs).
