CO-ACTION trial recruitment gets underway in Plymouth

We’re excited to share that recruitment has begun for the CO-ACTION trial in Plymouth! This is an important milestone for the study and one that has been a long time in the making.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us reach this stage, particularly our Public Contributors and community stakeholders. Their advice and insights have helped shape the study, including how we can make our research more inclusive of people who are often underserved by healthcare research. Their contributions have been invaluable in helping us develop an approach that better reflects the needs and experiences of people living with multiple long-term health conditions.

Working with local partners

In Plymouth, we’re working in collaboration with two local healthcare providers, Improving Lives Plymouth and Waterside Primary Care Network, to identify and recruit people who are living with multiple long-term health conditions.

The CO-ACTION trial will explore whether personalised, coordinated support can improve health and wellbeing for people who may need additional support alongside their existing care.

What will the trial involve?

Participants will be randomly allocated to one of two groups. The control group will continue to receive their usual care, while the intervention group will receive up to six months of person-centred support from a trained intervention facilitator. This support is designed to help participants identify and prioritise their needs and explore what support may be available to them through local health, social care and community services.

Our research team will assess participants’ health and wellbeing at the start of the study and again at 3, 6 and 12 months. This will allow us to compare outcomes between the two groups and explore how any changes develop during and after the intervention.

Recruitment in Plymouth will continue over the next 12 months, with a target of around 100 participants across both groups.

We’re delighted to have reached this stage and look forward to the next phase of the study. Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed their time, knowledge and experience to help make CO-ACTION possible. We couldn’t have reached this point without you!
