Are you about to or have you published in journals? Then come and join us this week for an exploration of the choices involved in publishing (e.g. copyright transfer agreements, open access publishing) as part of our schedule of activities for International Open Access Week 2018.
You can take park in the The Publishing Trap, a game we are playing across campus sparking debates on copyright and getting those competitive juices flowing as we aim for the giddy heights of lasting academic legacy (the winner takes it all!)
The Publishing Trap is a board game from the UK Copyright Literacy team that allows participants to explore the impact of scholarly communications choices, and discuss the role of open access in research by following the lives of four researchers – from doctoral research through to their academic legacies.
It’s aimed at early career researchers and academics, as well as anyone who has a vested interested in understanding how access to information works and how the whole scholarly communication system in higher education operates. Although it is not intended to promote any particular ideological position, it should be valuable to staff who are advocating for a greater acceptance of open access publishing models, and trying to encourage academic staff to make informed choices when they sign publishing contracts and submit their work to the institutional repository.
During Open Access Week, staff from the library will be taking the game on tour across the University with the remaining dates as follows:
- Wednesday 24 September, 16:30–18:00, Portland Square C4.
- Thursday 25 September, 12:30–14:00, Charles Seale-Hayne Library, room 008.
The game is an ideal activity for any research events – contact your Information Specialist to request a bespoke session.
