This year we have employed 17 students from across the University who have been working with us and their peers to gather feedback on the technologies used in learning and teaching, providing an insight into any future opportunities. The 17 student digital champions represent all Faculties across the university including first, second, final and postgraduate students.
The Student Digital Champions started in the week beginning 11th of March with a face-to-face induction session with the intention of students being physically active across the campus for 3 hours a week for 12 weeks. However due to COVID-19 this was rapidly moved online with the students working remotely. With the change of situation, working remotely for all, we started our ‘online’ programme with a further induction via Zoom. This enabled the students to ‘meet’ each other, talk through the practicalities and discuss any concerns they may have with our new remote working scenarios.
A broad outline of what have they been working on:
- How to use Zoom and Panopto help sheets and videos for students (for PCs, Macs, tablets and mobile phones)
- Zoom etiquette guidelines for students
- Feedback on our recently created Xerte Learning Online resource
- Reviewed Digital Education induction materials, for changes to be implemented for 2020/21 inductions
- reviewing the student Digital Capabilities toolkit
- Testing our latest chatbot initiative
- An ongoing activity include promoting the Jisc Digital Insights Survey to students and to feed into our VLE review.
In their next 6 weeks we are looking to work closely with stakeholders from across the institution to provide further support and help materials to the student population.
