Nicosia Residency – Cyprus – 2013-2015
featuring work by Liz Nicol, Hannah Drayson and Carole Baker and with an introduction by Professor Liz Wells
Following her residency in 2013 Liz Nicol has returned to Nicosia. She will talk about the development of her new work the ‘Green Line’ and will share some video sketches that are part of an ongoing process in response to the ‘old city’ of Nicosia.
Hannah Drayson’s work explores techniques that mobilise the imagination as a medium, in particular hypnosis. Her month in Nicosia was spent developing a divinatory mapping practice based on guided visualisation. She will present her thinking process during this period and show some of the results.
Through journeys across Cyprus and encounters with dogs, rescuers and sanctuaries, Carole investigates the consequences of the Cypriot stray dog policy: identification, incarceration and death. Her work explores otherness and affect, intertwined with the physical landscape and the politics of the crossroads that is Cyprus.
The residency scheme, which has run for three years (2013-2015), has been extended for a further two years. Organised by The Nicosia Municipal Art Centre and Plymouth University the residency provides accommodation and technical support. We hope this will also lead to exhibition possibilities at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, in Plymouth, and elsewhere.
Applications for this years Nicosia residency are open until 29 Feb so please also come along if you are considering applying.
The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre and the School of Art and Media invite expressions of interest/draft proposals for a one-month artist residency, Autumn 2016, open to practitioners based in the School of Art and Media, Plymouth University.
The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre is based in the centre of the old city, in the Powerhouse (formally an electricity generating station) located c. 200m from the Green Line (the buffer zone of Nicosia, controlled by the UN, which divides the southern from the northern part of the city). The Arts Centre includes gallery space, a café/restaurant, library, shop, and an on-site studio apartment for visiting artists. Director, Dr Yiannis Toumazis, also lectures at Frederick University, Nicosia, chairs the Board of the National Theatre of Cyprus, and has curated numerous exhibitions including, in 2011, the Cypriot Pavilion at Venice Biennale.
