Technology aside, what is Globus Pharyngeus?

Globus Pharyngeus is the term applied to the sensation of a lump or discomfort in the throat. This is a fairly common condition and represents about 4% of new referrals to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.

Why develop an app for this?

The app was designed and developed for use at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The approach behind the idea was to provide an app that patients diagnosed with Globus Phayngeus could use to better manage their symptoms as well as provide some valuable information about the condition.

The app offers a simple calendar view and prompts the user to undertake certain throat exercises daily as demonstrated in the app. When the user completes them, they can log it which allows them to track progression that hopefully helps them. The condition generates a percentage of referrals so this app helps alleviate the demand in staff time in the clinic.

About this app update…

This version (1.2) includes some important bug fixes such as videos not playing in-app as well as push notifications not working on all devices.

The app now functions in full screen on the latest smartphone and tablet devices (i.e. no black edges on iPhone X).

The design has been enhanced to provide better accessibility to users. Improvements have been made to the use of colours, font styles, and padding.

We hope that both existing and new users of the app enjoy the updates and features it offers. We always welcome any feedback and suggestions for improvements.

The Globus Pharyngeus app is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and web app.
